Moving with Kids by Jennifer Shaw
"Moving is viewed as one of the more stressful events. Be sensitive to how moving effects your children. Include the kids in the process. 'Find fun things first.' to ease the transititon. 'Make it an adventure'. Inform your Realtor about the children's interests, ages and illnesses, if any.
With school age children, try to move during the summer and early enough so they can meet new friends prior to school beginning. Arrange fun activities to meet new friends.
Prior to moving have the children say farewell to their old friends, ask them to write or email them in their new home and community.
Be sensitive to the kids needs of feeling overwhelmed and allow them to sit it out for a while and talk about it. Purchase some excellent storybooks about moving (Ask Kay for a copy). Have your chilfen bring along a favorite book or stuffed animal to ease the transition. Allow them to decorate their own rooms.
It is a great idea to set up the kids rooms first. Let someone else take the chidlren away on moving day--'to avoid the chaos.' Allow for a new pet--'creature comfort' and/or borrow one from the Junior Museum (See the Alexander Lindsay Junior Musieum in Walnut Creek!)."
